The R5 Residential Combination Inspector designation is earned by passing four exams, B1 building, E1 electrical, M1 mechanical and P1 plumbing, and nothing about the designation dictates the order. That freedom is a lever most candidates never pull: they take the exams alphabetically, or in whatever order the study materials arrived, and give away an advantage that costs nothing. Order determines how much each exam's preparation subsidizes the next, where in the sequence your morale gets its first win, and which trade's vocabulary you face when your method is weakest. Why order matters at all

Every open-book code exam in this family has the same shape: 60 questions, 120 minutes, book on the table, which works out to 120 seconds per question. The winning skill is navigation, converting a plainly worded question into the code's own vocabulary and getting to the requirement before the clock notices. That skill is built once and reused four times. The vocabulary and the map of each book, by contrast, are per-trade and have to be loaded fresh each time. Good sequencing exploits exactly this split: build the method where it is cheapest to build, then carry it into progressively more foreign territory.

There is also a plain human argument. Four exams is a project measured in months of evenings, and projects like that die in the middle, not the beginning. An early pass, earned on home turf, is fuel. The four exams are not shaped alike

Before choosing an order, look at how differently the four papers concentrate their weight. These figures are transcribed from ICC's published content outlines, and each exam's areas sum to exactly 100 percent.

B1 is the breadth exam. Walls carry 27 percent, but the real story is that the top three areas, walls at 27, public safety at 17 and footings and foundations at 16, cover 60 percent of the paper across three genuinely different subjects. B1 rewards a candidate who can move around the whole book.

E1 is a two-area exam wearing a six-area outline. Branch circuits and feeders at 28 percent plus wiring methods and distribution at 21 make up nearly half the paper, and the single heaviest subtopic anywhere on it is service grounding and bonding at 9 percent. An E1 candidate who owns branch circuits, wiring methods and service grounding has broken the back of the exam.

M1 concentrates harder than any exam in the family: combustion air is 19 percent as one undivided subtopic. Add chimneys and vents at 18 and fuel supply systems at 15, and half the exam is the fuel-burning appliance path, air in, fuel in, combustion products out. M1 rewards depth on a narrow core studied as one system rather than three chapters.

P1 stacks its weight in two adjacent areas: sanitary drainage at 23 percent and vents at 22, which is 45 percent of the exam in the drain-waste-vent system alone. It also hides a crossover that matters for sequencing: the P1 scope reaches into fuel gas piping, combustion air and venting, the very material that dominates the M1. Hold that thought.

First exam by background

The rule is simple: start where the vocabulary gap is smallest. The exam wording and the code filing system differ in every trade, but in your own trade you already know most of the translations without having studied them. That is the cheapest possible terrain for building the timed-navigation method you will reuse on the other three. From there, each background has a natural sequence.

  • Carpenter, framer or general contractor: B1 first, no hesitation, since the exam is your working life with different filing labels. Then E1, M1, P1 or B1 into the M1 and P1 pair with E1 last, depending on which remaining trade you have brushed against most. Keep M1 and P1 back to back whichever branch you choose.
  • Electrician: E1 first, B1 second. Your first exam trains the method on home turf, and B1 second gives you the whole-house context early. Finish with M1 then P1 or P1 then M1, adjacent either way, since their fuel-gas material overlaps.
  • Plumber: P1 first, M1 second, and this is the strongest overlap play in the whole family. The P1 outline already includes fuel gas piping, combustion air and venting, so your first exam's prep directly primes the subtopic that is 19 percent of your second. Then B1, with E1 last.
  • HVAC or mechanical: M1 first, P1 second, the same pairing run in reverse, since combustion air, venting and fuel supply are your daily work and P1's water-heater and fuel-gas material meets you halfway. Then B1, with E1 last.

Notice what the four sequences share. The trade pair of M1 and P1 travels together in every one of them, because the fuel-burning appliance path, combustion air, venting, fuel supply, appears on both outlines and studying the pair adjacently means paying for that material once instead of twice. And E1 lands last for everyone except electricians, because electrical vocabulary is the most self-contained of the four; it borrows the least from the other trades, so it benefits least from earlier exams and costs the most when attempted with an untrained method.

Why B1 early helps the other three

Whatever your background, put B1 first or second. The reasoning is structural. The building exam covers the house that the other three trades live inside: the framing the wiring runs through, the floor system the piping penetrates, the egress and safety layer everything must respect. Fireblocking where systems pass through concealed cavities, draftstopping in floor-truss spaces, the difference between the two, notching and boring awareness, attic access and ventilation: this is B1 material that keeps resurfacing when the other trades' questions describe where their work meets the structure. A candidate carrying B1 fluency reads every later exam's scenarios faster, because the scene itself is familiar.

There is also a quieter overlap in how the outlines begin. All four exams carry an administrative strand, project administration and public information and legal matters on each published outline, and the navigation habits for permits, approvals and administrative questions are the same habits on every paper. B1's Code Administration area is small at 4 percent, but the muscle it builds discounts a strand of all three remaining exams. Small, but the combination path is won on exactly these compounding discounts.

Spacing the exam dates

Book the first exam before you feel fully ready, and the rest at intervals of a few weeks each. The reasoning against long gaps: timed navigation is a perishable skill, and a sequence with months between sittings means paying warm-up costs four times. The reasoning against short gaps: each new exam needs real drill time in a physically different book, and the first interval especially carries the load of building your method, logging your slow lookups and fixing them. Weeks, not days, and not seasons.

Treat the first exam as calibration, whatever its result. It tells you how your practice seconds-per-lookup translate into real testing conditions, how your pacing held across the full 120 minutes, and where fatigue showed up. Feed that back into the plan: if your speed collapsed in the final third, later prep cycles need full-length two-hour simulations, not more content review. This is also the argument for never booking two exams in the same week early in the path; you would be committing to the second before the first has taught you anything.

Respect the fatigue math across the whole project too. The R5 path totals 240 questions and eight hours of open-book testing, and each sitting is its own two-hour endurance event. Lookup speed decays across a session; the question you find in 40 seconds at minute ten takes 90 at minute one hundred. Every prep cycle should end with at least one full-length timed simulation, because the fourth exam deserves the same respect as the first, and by then overconfidence, not ignorance, is the live risk.

One glossary across all four books

The single most valuable artifact of the whole project is a translation glossary you start on day one of exam one and carry to the end: the plain phrase a question would use, the term the code files it under, which exam it belongs to, and one line on why the filing surprises people. Keep it as one list, not four. The point is not the entries; it is the reflex the list trains, asking what does the code call this before touching the book, and a unified list trains that reflex as one habit across every trade instead of four separate habits.

  • From the building exam: the basement bedroom window is filed under emergency escape and rescue openings, within means of egress, and the room is a sleeping room, not a bedroom. Shear walls are braced wall panels. House wrap is a weather-resistant covering.
  • From the electrical exam: the ground rod at the panel is service grounding and bonding, the heaviest single subtopic on E1 at 9 percent. GFCI protection questions are filed under branch circuits within wiring methods, not under devices, where candidates look first and lose a minute.
  • From the mechanical exam: the dryer vent is clothes dryer exhaust, filed under exhaust and ventilation rather than duct systems. The furnace-closet air question is combustion air, the 19 percent subtopic.
  • From the plumbing exam: the p-trap is filed under traps within sanitary drainage, and the backflow preventer is protection of the potable water supply, filed under water supply, not under valves or fixtures.

Review the whole list, all trades, before every exam, not just the entries for the exam at hand. Cross-trade review keeps the reflex general, and the crossover entries earn their keep directly: the mechanical and plumbing rows overlap on fuel gas and combustion air, and seeing them side by side is exactly the pair-study advantage the sequencing above is built on.

Reallocating study hours per exam

The weight concentrations should set your hours, and because the four exams concentrate differently, the right allocation changes each time. The mistake to avoid is running the same front-to-back study pattern four times; the outlines are telling you, in percentages, to do otherwise.

  • For B1, spend the bulk of your time on the big three, walls, public safety and foundations, which carry 60 percent, and give building planning and administration a single day between them at 12 percent combined.
  • For E1, drill branch circuits and feeders at 28 percent and wiring methods at 21 until they are reflex, and give service grounding and bonding attention out of proportion to its size, because at 9 percent it is the heaviest subtopic on any area of the exam.
  • For M1, study the fuel-burning path as one connected system, combustion air at 19, chimneys and vents at 18, fuel supply at 15, which is roughly half the exam moving through one physical process.
  • For P1, treat drainage and vents as a single hydraulic system worth 45 percent combined, and note that venting requirements, methods and installation is 11 percent as one subtopic, the largest on any residential exam after M1's combustion air.

FAQ: is there a required order for the four exams?

No. The R5 designation is earned by passing all four, and the designation itself is silent on sequence. Every ordering in this guide is strategy, chosen to make the exams subsidize each other, not a rule from the certifying body. FAQ: should I use the same code edition for all four?

Keep it consistent unless something forces otherwise. ICC offers exams on more than one code edition at a time, you effectively choose the version at registration, and certification is accepted regardless of version.
